Emmy Winner Hank Azaria Joins #L.A. Rising to Help Disaster Survivors Turn "Pain into Purpose"

LOS ANGELES — Marking its first year of documenting the living history of the 2025 L.A. fires, the non-profit podcast #L.A. Rising — Stories of Healing, Help & Hope concludes the year with a landmark episode featuring six-time Emmy-winning actor and philanthropist Hank Azaria. Host Kim Marshall shepherds a heartfelt conversation about addiction recovery, social justice, and the resilience required to move forward after life-altering events.

The episode's Wellness Lift segment features Stanford disaster mental health specialist Dr. Adrianne Heinz, who offers coping tools for fire victims navigating their first post-fire holiday season. "Eventually when your wounds can become scars, there's potential for post-traumatic growth — a time when you can take more from this pain than it's taking from you," says Dr. Heinz.

Born from host Kim Marshall's harrowing escape on foot from the Palisades Fire with two dogs and a suitcase in tow, the podcast has grown into a platform featuring voices ranging from L.A. Supervisor Lindsay Horvath and Army Corps of Engineers Colonel Eric Swenson to Maui Mayor Richard Bissen and Poet Laureate Lester Graves Lennon.

#L.A. Rising is a 501(c)(3) non-profit podcast available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Amazon, and more. Audio and video production by NOVA Media. Fiscal partner: Creative Visions Foundation.

#L.A. Rising Podcast Turns Wildfire Trauma into a Living History and Wellness Resource for SoCal—and the World

LOS ANGELES — When veteran wellness podcaster Kim Marshall was forced to flee on foot with two dogs and a suitcase during what officials are calling a "fire hurricane" in Los Angeles, she didn't expect to launch a podcast just weeks later. But at the urging of Emmy-winning Spectrum News 1 anchor Giselle Fernandez, Marshall created #L.A. Rising — Stories of Healing, Help & Hope: a wellness-forward podcast documenting the aftermath of one of California's most devastating wildfire events—and offering emotional and physical recovery tools to those affected.

Backed by a small business grant from the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, the podcast features first-hand survivor accounts alongside expert insights — from a FEMA rescuer and the L.A. Rams announcer who battled flames for hours, to a rabbi whose temple survived but whose home did not, and a geopolitical economist from Davos on climate disaster as the world's greatest economic threat.

Twenty percent of sponsorship revenue is donated to The L.A. Trust for Children's Health to support peer-led youth mental health services across LAUSD. "These kids have lost their schools, rec centers, libraries — everything familiar," says Maryjane Puffer, Executive Director of The L.A. Trust. "Recovery funds generated by this podcast are vital."

According to NOAA, billion-dollar disasters in the U.S. have increased 154% over the past two decades. #L.A. Rising is designed to serve as a template for healing and resilience for communities around the world. "Storytelling is what I have to offer," says Marshall. "And often that's the first step toward healing."

#L.A.
